Creating a Service
1. Start a new service
With an organisation selected, open Services in the sidebar (/services). The list shows each service’s name, specialty, setting and status, with a Continue setup link next to any of your own drafts.
Click New Service and fill in:
- Name: required, e.g. “Colorectal SOC: Referral to Discharge”.
- Specialty: optional, e.g. “Colorectal Surgery”.
- Setting: optional, e.g. “SOC, inpatient, primary care”.
Click Create Service. Any member of the organisation can create one. The service is created as a draft, with:
- a default Onboarding agent, already bound to run when a patient is added (see Service Agents)
- default AI encounter settings
and you go straight into the setup wizard.
2. Walk through the setup wizard
The wizard at /services/[serviceId]/setup has six steps, shown as numbered pills you can jump between freely. Every step is optional, and you can click Skip setup for now at any point and come back later. Only the service’s owner (or a Medbot platform administrator) can open the wizard.
Step 1: Care team
Add people from your organisation to the service. Each joins with the role they already hold in the organisation; there is no role to choose. See Care Team.
Step 2: Agent context
Describe, in plain language, what every agent in this service should know before it acts: how the service runs, who does what, when to escalate, and how to use the content library. It is given to every service agent run. You can also have AI draft it from your notes. See Service Context & Content.
Step 3: Agents
Create AI agents for this service, each with an audience (Staff, Patient or Onboarding), tools and instructions. The default onboarding agent is already here; rewrite its instructions or add agents alongside it. See Service Agents.
Step 4: Settings
- Patient agent: bind a Patient-audience agent so patients can chat with it over SMS or WhatsApp. See Patient Agent.
- AI encounters: which encounters the service offers and how each is set up. See AI Encounters & Kiosk.
- On patient added: an optional welcome message and the onboarding agent. See Patients & Cohort.
Step 5: Content library
Upload counselling protocols and reference material for the service’s agents, or attach documents already uploaded elsewhere. See Service Context & Content.
Step 6: Patients
Add patients to the cohort from the organisation’s Medplum patient directory. This step is deliberately last, so the agents, context, content and care team are in place before real patients start receiving invites and messages. See Patients & Cohort.
Use ← Back and Next: <step> → to move between steps. On the last step, click Finish setup to publish the service (from draft to published). Every step remains editable afterwards.
3. Continue setup later
If you skipped the wizard, the Services list shows a Continue setup link next to your own drafts, and the service’s page shows a draft banner with a Finish setup button.
4. The service page
A service’s page (/services/[serviceId]) organises everything into tabs:
| Tab | What it holds |
|---|---|
| General | Open Tasks for this service. When the patient agent is on, a summary card: turns in the last 7 days, pending drafts, open escalations, upcoming appointments, and patients whose choice the agent is waiting on. |
| Patients | The cohort roster. |
| Agents | Agent runs, daily agent schedules, and the service’s agents. |
| Service context | The agent context text, and an AI helper to draft it. |
| Content | The content library. |
| Care team | Members, coverage, and availability. |
| Settings | Patient agent, AI encounters, Channel, On patient added, and (owner only) the danger zone. |
Inside a service, the sidebar also lists Overview, Workstation, Patients, Agents, Service context, Content library, Care team, Patient channels and Settings. The breadcrumb has a service switcher (“Find service…”, All services, New service).
The owner can change the name, specialty and setting with Edit service details.
5. Deleting a service
The owner can delete a service from Settings → Danger zone. This permanently removes it with its care team, agents, cohort membership, encounter notes and message history. It cannot be undone. Patients stay in the organisation’s patient directory.
